Social Design

In March 2010, Lucy began the No Fixed Address Project as a part of her BA Industrial Design at RMIT.  Her client and collaborator was The Social Studio, a store in Melbourne, Australia that sells fashion items that have been made by local refugees from recycled and excess materials. The refugees work at The Social Studio where they gain an accreditation in Clothing Production that enables them to supply the store’s range as well as set them up for future employment.

Her class was commissioned to design and create a mobile store based on the frame of a three wheeled bicycle that could be ridden to location and set up on the street.

Initially working in pairs, Lucy and Interior Design student Aron Hemingway set about designing a concept:

Initial Sketches

Stop Motion of Final Model

The best two designs were selected to be made, and the Industrial Design class split into to two design teams to do so. Lucy’s team was constructing Tate Anson’s design, a practical concept with repeating triangle shapes.

Both finished stalls were part of the Melbourne State of Design Festival, with an event held in the Melbourne Central walkway overpass. The stalls were fully functional and there was also a fashion parade.

The bike stalls are currently being used by The Social Studio to sell their wares on the go.
